Hartlepool Borough Council has approved a new meteorological mast and equipment compound at Hartlepool Power Station, off Tees Road.

EDF Nuclear Energy Generation Limited applied for permission to build a 10-metre lattice mast, a data logger closet and anti-climb security fencing at the site. The compound will be located west of the power station, adjacent to the cricket ground.

Why the equipment is needed

The scheme follows an assessment of all EDF's operational power stations, which identified that existing meteorological measurement arrangements could be improved. The compound is required to measure, collect and analyse data to provide an accurate baseline of weather conditions.

The application stated the equipment is needed for a temporary period of 10 years.

Site selection

The proposed location was chosen to avoid sensitive habitats. Access will be provided through a maintained track to prevent unnecessary impacts on plants.

Background

Hartlepool nuclear power station came online 43 years ago and recently received another lifespan extension.
