Hartlepool Borough Council has revealed the winning names for its four dedicated food waste collection wagons, chosen by primary pupils from across the borough in a competition organised by the council.
The winning pupils each received a £50 gift voucher, with matching vouchers awarded to their schools. Duranta Energy Ltd, the company that processes the borough's food waste, donated the vouchers.
Winners also received a complimentary seven-day swim pass for Highlight Active Wellbeing Hub and a free bike service courtesy of Summerhill Country Park.
Council praises pupils' creativity
Councillor Amanda Napper, Chair of the Council's Neighbourhoods and Regulatory Services Committee, said the council was "delighted with the response to the competition and the creativity shown by the young people who entered." She added that the winning names are "fun, memorable and perfectly capture the important role these vehicles play in helping Hartlepool recycle more and reduce waste."
Sri Brahma, Group Operations Director of Duranta Energy Ltd, congratulated the pupils and said the company was "delighted to have supported this competition." He noted that Duranta Energy transforms food waste into renewable energy through work with households and local councils.
The named wagons are now in service collecting food waste from residents' homes across Hartlepool.
